I love an easy cocktail. Paper plane ratio of 1oz. each Planteray Dark (bit of extra sweetness is welcome here), Aperol, Montenegro, Lemon, and this is delicious. Citrus profile leans trends more toward grapefruit more than lemon, orange or blood orange, but is really none of the above. Unlike so many amari, the Montenegro keeps this drink fresh and refreshing. Definitely on my 'what do I do with all these lemons?' list. Nicely balanced.

Made it with Myers Original Dark Rum, Aperol and Nonino Quintessenzia. In this combination the rum comes lovely through. Although I am a big fan of the original Paper Plane, I would love this combination to be a bit less bitter. Maybe Mionetto Aperitivo could do that.

I found the reason for the bitterness in testing my new bottle Myers. This rum has a nice taste, but a bitter undertone, which makes it necessary to adapt cocktails .

I used Goslings as my 'black' rum when I last made this.

I always keep a bottle of Goslings in the bar because it makes a nice shakeup from my normal rum, but I have never tried it as the base in a cocktail until now. Wow! What a recipe! My only alteration was to nip down the lemon juice to 15ml. Tart with complex notes from the Montenegro and a nice weight with the rum. Instant favorite.

Just made and what a great drink!!! I think the fun part is you can switch up the amaro’s and rums and give it different twists! Mine is by the recipe and used Aperol. On some of these equa part drinks, you can bump it up to say, 30 ml of each…plus if you’ve cut a lemon, you now have to use the other half and make a second one!!!! 😃

This was delicious. I used Averna for the Amaro and a grapefruit twist. Amazing! I'll probably try it again tonight and regal shake the grapefruit twist.

I made a slightly bigger cocktail with equal parts (3cl each) and for the rum a mix of 0.5cl Cruzan, 2cl Havana 7 and 0.5 Probitas. It's honestly delightful. The rum is present but not overly so. It's incredibly well balanced yet certainly distinct from the Paper Plane. The Montenegro helps with merging the molasses notes and the floral notes.

This recipe makes me think that the Paper Plane formula should be a stalwart classic, akin to the Last Word and Negroni.

Totally agree, I’m having an evening full of planes it seems and this is almost as good as the paper variety but not quite. Two probably silly questions, I’m using my Cynar for these, that is an amaro right? Also why are they all 22.5ml equal parts? I’m doing 25 ml and damn the consequences 🤣

Yup, Cynar is an amaro. It's basically a catch-all term for all Italian bitter liqueurs. Most of them aren't really replaceable by each other so I'm not sure why we lump them together but that's the way it is. Regarding the measures I do the same thing. As long as the proportions stay the same I say to hell with it. 😂

Deliciously tart, and the first cocktail that I've truly loved the inclusion of black strap rum in the center. Used Cruzan black strap, Aperol, Montenegro. This one's a keeper. The maple syrup flavor in Cruzan's black strap is usually overpowering, but it's moderated and elevated in this.

A good drink that starts with fresh lemon and ends with mild Montenegro/aperitif (I used Nonino Aperitivo). The only downside for me is that I can't really taste the rum (Goslings in my case). I might need to try it again with something a bit more assertive and see how it shakes out.

The description in the book has an editing error. It refers to it as being created by "Emily Gosling of Black rum (e.g. Goslings)"

Hi Matt, many thanks for letting us know about the error...we've made a note to fix it for the next edition.

Improvised last night. Bacardi black, Campari/ Combier triple sec (split), Rammazzotti, lemon juice. Excellent! Tonight will do the same but with Averna/Vecchio Amaro del Capo split as the amaro.

Excellent again. Bittersweet and tangy with hints of mint from the Vecchio and verrry complex. Must revizit...
