History

Today, the term Red Snapper means a Bloody Mary made with gin instead of vodka. However, the first known recipes, from the 1940s, describe a 50-50 blend of vodka and tomato juice, with spices, just like an early Bloody Mary: one book even states that the Red Snapper is identical to the Bloody Mary.

Review

Looks like a Bloody Mary, and tastes a lot like a Bloody Mary, but features gin's aromatic botanicals.

Being a big fan of Bloody Mary and gin I expected to love this, but strangely found the gin botanicals more intrusive than supportive.

As a Canadian, I've had my fair share of Caesars (Bloody Mary's, with Clamato), but this must be my first with gin. I am pleasantly impressed. I think the sugar is necessary, though I would add more lemon.
Usually, I toss the squeezed wedge into the drink.

A lime wedge would indeed add to flavour and appearance. Thanks, Michael.

This was fantastic. And I would agree with other expressing the sentiment that sugar (syrup) is not necessary for this (at least at this measure). I was in the same boat as Jesse M in that I had all of these ingredients at hand. Trying to clear out my supplies. Not a major deviation on my own recipe for a Bloody Mary, but this was still a winner. (9 Oct 2022, 3:07a)

Yeah, hmm... Made it again right after the first attempt... While the sans-sugar is better, it might need a boost from spice and/or citrus... This is one of them ongoing artistic pursuits haha. Never be perfection.

Just made this given Difford's rating and the fact I happened to have every ingredient luring around...and was pleasantly surprised. Did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did, especially after accidentally adding a bit too much Tabasco (not a spice fan!). Will have to make this again with a meal soon

After reading up on the rolling technique, is there any reason this variant is shaken and not rolled?

Hi Jesse. Thanks for bringing to my attention. Indeed, like the Bloody Mary, this cocktail is better 'rolled' rather than shaken. I've amended "How to make" accordingly.

Tried with freshly juiced tomatoes (as opposed to tomato juice) and it’s fabulously light and refreshing. Recommended.

Omitted the sugar, slightly upped the juice - tasty!

Agreed - there’s no need for sugar. Perfect flight on a plane, when your taste buds are dulled
