In his seminal 1948 The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, David Embury notes under his Rob Roy entry, "If orange bitters are used instead of Angostura, this drink is sometimes called the Highland, or the Highland Fling, or the Express. I discovered it as the "Highlander" in 2010 on the menu of the Campbell Apartment in New York City, USA.
