Use an authentic tasting distilled old tom gin that's balanced rather than overly sweet, and you'll have a fabulous cocktail.
I've used dry vermouth to balance the sweet vermouth. However, if you're looking for simplicity and fewer ingredients then you may prefer to omit the dry vermouth, balancing by instead reducing the sweet vermouth and maraschino while also doubling the bitters as follows:
60ml (2oz) Old Tom Gin
20ml (2/3oz) Sweet vermouth
5ml (1 barspoon) Maraschino liqueur
2 dashes Aromatic bitters
