Review

A floral riff on the classic Last Word with maraschino to the fore.

The original, equal-parts, recipe is a touch on the sweet side. The addition of saline solution subtly improves this cocktail.

Some are tall, some are little, in this travel to know all Lost Word variations. This is in a 7.7 level of a 10 scale. Certainly not as dull as someone else said in here. Is too soft, like if a usual Last Word is very manly, and this is subtle, floral, decimononic. A verse in a general poetry of words. Certailny in all recipes here there are the ones just too thin. At final in the Nick & Nora ends like a melted sorbet:sweet, citric and just a hint of proof.

I found this to be a mediocre cocktail, and one of the least appealing Last Word variants. Using the higher proportion of gin gives you a chance to taste the other components, but I found the interplay of maraschino and elderflower to be jarring.

I made this for the wife after she had had a Chartreuse-less Last Word version at a swanky bar. Wife approved. Definitely needed the saline drops to balance the sweetness.

Surely it should be named Penultimate Word

Was looking for a Last Word variation to husband the remains of a small bottle of Chartreuse and found this. Made with Bombay Sapphire and used a Meyer lemon fresh off the indoor tree. It was fabulous! I used some salt as suggested and did not find it too sweet.

A but too sweet but otherwise perfect . The ingredients work really well together, but you need a strong, characterful gin (I used Tanqueray) to get a balanced result.

Agreed. I've now moved away from the equal parts recipe in search of better balance. The addition of a few drops of saline also helps.

The saline absolutely makes this sing

I was not prepared for how much I liked this! Though obviously not as deeply herbaceous as The Last Word, neither do any of the ingredients cost $60+/bottle! The cherry and elderflower play nicely with the lemon.

Flawless combination of flavors. No tweaking needed —the mix is perfect as written. Added to Favourites.

might want to decease marachino to 1/2 oz and increase elderflower to 1 oz

This is delicious. I'll have to invest in a bottle of green chartreuse at some point to try the classic Last Word, but this is a great cocktail.
