The cocktails we came across during November and liked enough to add to Difford’s Guide, plus those recipes we’ve revisited and updated.
With: Rye whiskey, amaro, Angostura bitters and orange bitters.
We say: Basically, a classic Manhattan with amaro in place of the sweet vermouth. Tasty.
Black Manhattan recipe
With: Sauvignon Blanc white wine, elderflower cordial and cumber tonic water.
We say: Cucumber, elderflower and grassy Sauvignon Blanc wine combine as a trio of summery flavours in this light and refreshing cocktail.
With: Yellow Chartreuse, coconut syrup, pineapple puree and lime juice.
We say: Reminiscent of a tequila Piña Colada with the merest hint of Chartreuse.
Don's Coco Punch recipe
With: Basil leaves, reposado tequila, elderflower liqueur, sugar syrup and lime juice.
We say: A basil tequila sour (Margarita if you will) sweetened with elderflower liqueur - basil and elderflower flavours sit well with the tequila and lime.
Flor De Don Juan recipe
With: Dry gin, vanilla syrup, orange bitters, Schweppes 1783 Crisp Tonic water and champagne.
We say: A summery aperitif gin cocktail with crisp tonic water and enlivening champagne, flavoured with hints of vanilla and orange.
Recipe created in 2017 by Tony Conigliaro with Schweppes 1783 Crisp Tonic Water.
G+T Royale recipe
With: Fino sherry and ginger ale.
We say: A light and fabulously refreshing summery aperitivo, that's also perfect for Christmas.
Ginger Snap (Fino Sherry & Ginger Ale) recipe
With: Pot still Jamaican rum, Americano blanco, Aperol, Byrrh and orange bitters.
We say: Bittersweet and boozy with a dry finish. Striking the right degree of dilution is key to the success of this cocktail - stir a little longer than usual and if using ice straight from the freezer perhaps consider adding a dash of chilled water.
The Italian Job Cocktail recipe
With: Aged rum, Swedish punch and Sauvignon Blanc white wine
We say: An equal parts riff on a Doctor No.1 using white wine acidity in place of lime juice. Tangy and slightly sharp in flavour with more than a hint of Swedish punch funkiness.
It's Hartnell Damn It! recipe
With: Reposado tequila, grapefruit juice, fino sherry and maraschino liqueur.
We say: Tequila laced with rich maraschino balancing sour grapefruit and dry sherry - a very refreshing aperitif.
The Marguerite recipe
With: Blanco tequila, crème de pîche and tonic water.
We say: Light easy drinking and refreshing, delicate quinine bitterness in the tonic water balances light sweetness from the peach liqueur in this tequila laced spritz.
Marigold Spritz recipe
With: Dry gin, pink grapefruit juice, Campari, lime juice and sugar syrup.
We say: Dry, bitter, very refreshing and mouth puckering with grapefruit and gin bittered and coloured by red Italian bitters.
Old Acquittance recipe
With: Blended scotch whisky, Speyside single malt scotch whisky, Grand Marnier, Lillet Blanc, dry vermouth and black pepper.
We say: Dry and aromatic with vermouth and aromatised wine, along with rich orange liqueur, gently influencing scotch whisky, enlivened with a subtle black pepper bite.
Peat's Dragon recipe
With: Campari Bitter, sweet vermouth and salty lemon tonic water.
We say: Lightly bittersweet and superbly refreshing, a tasty aperitif cocktail.
Sbagliato With Tonic recipe
With: Jägermeister, coconut rum and pineapple juice.
We say: Slightly sweet and very fruity - who'd have guessed Jägermeister would work so well with the classic coconut rum and pineapple juice combo.
Surfer On Acid Cocktail recipe
With: Mezcal, amaro, Byrrh quinquina and celery bitters.
We say: Bittersweet with mezcal and amaro combining harmoniously along with aromatic wine and celery bitters.
With: Applejack, lime juice, Angostura bitters and ginger beer.
We say: Take a Moscow Mule and make with apple brandy in place of vodka and you've a Washington's Applejack Mule. Tasty - arguably tastier than a Moscow Mule.
