Review:

A calvados-based Red Hook. It has a touch of apple but a bit less bite than Vincenzo Errico's bottled-in-bond rye whiskey-based original.

History:

Created in March 2022 by yours truly after picking up a bottle of bottled-in-bond applejack when making a Red Hook rather than the intended rye whiskey. I then swapped applejack for calvados.

Yes, the applejack (I used Laird's BIB) is good/great... But I was immediately eager to try this instead with calvados... It's funny, because the apple element/flavor is more dominant than in almost any other cocktail I've made. But, yeah, it does resemble a Manhattan, but a drier, more sharply/tartly-fruited version... I'm entranced.

With only three ingredients, this is a delightful after-dinner cocktail or nightcap. Slightly bitter with hints of apple, cherry and spices. Perfect to relax after the day.

I love Manhattans my wife not so much but she really enjoyed this one. A lovely cocktail for those who are not whiskey fans

I always look forward to Simon’s weekly e-mail & there is a mini fist pump of joy if I read a recipe & realize I have all the ingredients :-)

This cocktail also got the nod of approval from He Who Is Hard To Please (definite double fist pump moment!)
