Prepare

Select and pre-chill an OLD-FASHIONED GLASS.

Prepare garnish of blood orange slice wheel.

Method

SHAKE all ingredients with ice.

STRAIN into ice-filled glass.

Wow! Love this!! Wonderful combination of flavours, especially for the scotch lovers who don’t mind a but of fruity and citrus zing! Straight to the favourites list. Perfectly balanced for me - boozy, fruity, sweet, sour. Balvenie 12, old Simon, Luxardo.

Interesting combination. Maraschino flavor was a bit strong for my liking here. Would reduce this if I made it again. However, it becomes a better drink with more dilution as it sits. I used Bols, Monkey Shoulder, and Luxardo.

A mild, even tasting cocktail. The Luxardo is fairly prominent upfront and then the blood orange and Genever come in at the end. Blended Scotch is a little noticeable at the end also. Very nice and refreshing.

This was great. Refreshing, herbal, and a little hint of smoky.
Did not have old Genever only Bols. So I mixed a California St. George dry rye gin and the Bols to get a more complex flavour of a malted product. Did a 50/50 mix. Worked very well.

This was good. I didn't have any genever, so I used our local, San Diego Cutwater Barrel Rested Gin. A meh single malt from Trader Joe's. My go-to maraschino, Maraska. Fresh blood oranges, and Bob's your uncle. Next time, I might add a little float of some smoky Islay, and a little less maraschino.

I was wondering how much the blood orange flavour should be colouring this. Mine was having real trouble fighting its way through the Maraschino - which on its own was playing very nicely with the Bols genever and infinity bottle blended scotch. But the whole thing was flat. I added citric acid, saline solution and a spray of blood orange peel - and it's very delicious, but I have no idea if this is the right flavour profile.

I think the issue is the use of Bols Genever. Much better with an oude genever rather than a jonge. I use Rutte Old Simon Genever.

I'm confused by this comment... Is Bols Genever not an oude? It's classified as such here on DG (https://www.diffordsguide.com/beer-wine-spirits/1111/bols-genever) (even with comment history related to it previously being categorized as a jonge before being changed to the oude category...).

Having purchasrd some blood oranges, I've been working my way through the list of best cocktails with what I have available. Tried this using a Highland malt, Dalmore 12 year old, a delicious concoction, just the ticket as the Beast from the East II strikes.
