History

Adapted from a recipe in William James "Billy" Tarling's 1937 Café Royal Cocktail Book where the invention of this cocktail is credited to "F. G. Hunt". We've used a mandarin liqueur, but the original recipe calls for Van Der Hum tangerine liqueur. The original recipe is also shaken rather than stirred.

CRAZY CROSSING
Invented by F. G. Hunt
1/2 Plymouth Gin (Coates).
1/4 Noilly Prat Vermouth.
1/4 Dubonnet.
Dash Maraschino.
Dash Van der Hum.
Shake.

W. J. Tarling, Café Royal Cocktail Book, 1937

(Our thanks to Jason Clapham of Oxford, England for bringing this recipe to our attention and suggesting the use of Mandarine Napoléon.)

Review

We were disappointed with this. A Negroni variant that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

Another excellent cocktail utilizing Byrrh and Dry Curaçao. Finally found a vendor in Seattle carrying Mandarine Napoléon Liqueur. Can't wait to try it!

Disappointing. Turns out BevMo's website doesn't mention NOT AVAILABLE at the specific store, the inventory of which I thought I was searching. Reminds me of why I deleted my account with them some years ago. Hi Ho.

Fantastic cocktail. I've also used orange curacao for a more bitter taste.
