Prepare

Select and pre-chill a COUPE GLASS.

Prepare garnish of orange zest twist and Luxardo Maraschino Cherry.

Method

STIR all ingredients with ice.

FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.

Garnish

Express orange zest twist over cocktail and discard. Garnish with maraschino cherry.

A really excellent Manhattan. Since the Amaro is to the forefront, we thought that Montenegro, on its own, might be a wee bit timid up against the two whiskeys. So we did a split of 30ml Montenegro and 15ml Nardini. Lovely for us. We used Elijah Craig Small Batch for the Bourbon and Rittenhouse for the Rye.

We made this with Amaro di Angostura, and found it extremely well balanced and absolutely delicious. We used Eagle Rare bourbon and a Bruichladdich rye, and wouldn't change a thing. Looking forward to drinking this again!

As others have commented, far too sweet for me. I had to add some Punt e Mes and extra bourbon to balance it out to our tastes.

This is such a pleasing riff on a Manhattan. I think the split whiskey is a grand touch, as I used a mid-grade Evan Williams for the bourbon and Redemption for the rye and both are detectable amid the Montenegro. Sweeter than a typical Manhattan, but supremely drinkable and balanced. This one is going into my regular rotation.

Certainly, bitter sweet orange with angostura flavours in there. I find I like it best using just Rye rather than a split base.

If you like Montenegro, this is a well-balanced drink that lets it shine. (The orange zest twist really helps with the balance.) I used Wild Turkey 101 Rye and a 50/50 blend of Wild Turkey 101 & 81 bourbon. 45 second stir for decent dilution.

Had the right ingredients this time. This was just what the doctor ordered for a cold January evening. It almost makes the English winter bearable. I must try it against a Sweet Manhattan.

This was very good. We did read the comments before, and found it to be a little sweet for our tastes. We added 2 drops of orange bitters, and that seemed to cut down on the sweet.

Indeed overpowering as previous commentator mentioned, though for me it was too sweet, not too bitter. Next time I will cut down on the Montenegro and see if I like it.

I like Manhattans and bitter drinks but even I found this slightly over-powering. I tamed it with a bar spoon of syrup from the cherry jar and half a shot of sweet vermouth and it balanced better, to my taste.
