Review:

A Scotch single malt whisky-based Boulevardier with a touch of ginger spice. Or, perhaps consider this a Negroni for a winter's eve by the fireside. Either way, it's tasty!

History:

Adapted from a recipe created in 2016 by Günter Windhorst at his Windhorst Bar in Berlin, Germany. Günter says this was his 36th riff of the Negroni , and his original recipe uses 40ml Talisker 10-year-old, 30ml Campari, 10ml Antica Formula, and 10ml Giffard Ginger of the Indies liqueur.

Alcohol content:

  • 1.7 standard drinks
  • 25.96% alc./vol. (25.96° proof)
  • 23.4 grams of pure alcohol

Reading the comments wasn’t sure about this, but I think it works! Had to do a bit of subbing: no carpano so mixed Cocchi Storico, punt e mes and Dolin rouge roughly equally. Fresh ginger syrup (fresh ginger juice 50/50 with rich syrup). Penicillin meets Blood and sand? Just need an open fire!

An off-putting Boulevardier. Made the above recipe, then a transitional take, 45-20-10-15 the specs, and I spit that out. The one that pushed it in the right direction was a 40-10-15-20 stir. Still not there... St George Baller, Campari, Carpano Antica, Barrow's.

Peated whisky kills this. Will try again with a different whisky to let the other ingredients join in.

I made mine with a Glenkinchie, a Johnnie Walker style whisky which I think did the trick nicely. Maybe needs a bit more Ginger, but has all the elements of a Negroni.

I agree that Laphroaig overwhelms everything else (just a bitter aftertaste, but no hints of ginger). Perhaps I should give it another try with a less smokey whiskey or play with proportions.

Based on ingredients alone, this drink should be near the top of my favorite list. As it stands though, I might need to play a little bit with the proportions, as all I really got was bitter Talisker, with nary a trace of ginger or vermouth. TBC.
