Dry and wonderfully aromatic with faint notes of almond from the fino sherry and delicately fruity maraschino. Delicious.

History:

Created for, or soon after, the Coronation of England's King Edward VII, who became King on 22 January 1901, upon the death of his mother, Queen Victoria. His Coronation was set for 26 June 1902, but just two days before, an emergency operation required for an attack of appendicitis forced the investiture to be postponed until 9 August 1902.

The Coronation Cocktail first appears in Charles S. Mahoney's 1905 The Hoffman House Bartender's Guide, where it is credited to Joseph Rose of Murry Bros.' Café in Newark, New Jersey, USA. The date of its creation is not given, but the cocktail won second prize in the 1903 Police Gazette Bartenders' Contest.

Just tried a recipe with the same name from another drink site: 45 ml dry vermouth, 22.5 ml fino sherry, 1 barspoon maraschino (amounted to 2.5 ml), and 2 dashes orange bitters (no garnish). I found that had more depth than the one above with equal parts vermouth/sherry and the maraschino, though subtle, somehow stood out a touch more as well. An olive in this does sound good though, hmm.

Your comment led me to revisit the Coronation No. 1, and I ended up with the above revised recipe.

Made with Martini Extra Dry & Oloroso Sherry. The Maraschino is a a key part of this cocktail.

Somehow, with the ingredients list calling for Noilly Prat, my mind automatically added gin, so I put in about an ounce of Blue Juice (Bombay Sapphire), and omitted the sugar syrup. It tasted very nice, and had quite a kick!

We find this delicious. For a richer cocktail use amontillado sherry and bianco vermouth, omitting the sugar syrup.
