Excellent drink and one where your choice of mezcal greatly influences the final product. I used illegal joven, which is a bit light and citrus forward and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Illegal joven, Luxardo maraschino, green chartreuse.

Yes very good why not

Just tried this with Boomsma Cloosterbitter replacing the green Chartreuse; it's a worthy substitute allbeit a much lower a.b.v. End results excellent.

This seems to be the same as another cocktail which is also on Difford's, a drink called Last Of The Oaxacans. A good drink!

Thanks for pointing out, James. I've added a link to the Last of the Oaxacans above.

Excellent. And easy to remember recipe... Got 5 stars. Another Last Word variation that I really loved is the Yes Dear!, with pisco.

Good with tequila, too. Cayéya in my case.

Love the variation, but I hate the name. I’d rather order a "Mezcal Last Word" and have the bartender say, "You mean a 'Closing Argument'?" Then I’d reply, "I hate that name. How can a variation of a two-syllable name turn into such a syllabic nightmare? 'Closing Argument' is pompous fluff, and I will wage a well-balanced war on that name."

The bartender says "I don't get paid enough for this, sir—I didn't name the drink." I’d say "Well, you get paid enough to correct me in front of my wife!"

Nicely balanced cocktail. I would fine strain to increase clarity.

Agreed. Thanks, Cameron. I've amended accordingly.

So well balanced a cocktail. I’m keeping a close eye on my GC levels given the current drought though

I frequently split my Chartreuse 50/50 with Génépy and with good results. Sipping on one right now!

Strangely enough this was the first drink that I was taught how to mix. Feels a bit nostalgic for me, and the taste is equally sublime. One of my all time favourites, really looking forward to getting a bottle of chartreuse in my possession and mixing this for friends.

The Last Word… eh, don’t really like it.

Bird is the Word #2, better, but still don’t love it.

Now the mezcal version… that’s where it’s at. But maybe I just love mezcal too much… is it better than an Avión de Papel with mezcal? The mystery remains unsolved.

I replaced lime juice with red grapefruit juice and it was even better. Optional abit of lime juice on top with simple syrup, while adding tekila in same proportion as added lime juice +simple syrop. Really good

All of Hall of Fame 2/291. I think I prefer the Last of the Oaxacans name but this is the one in the HOF! Really tasty last word riff, though not quite as good as the OG. Still a very solid 4.5/5, but I find the mezcal a little...overbearing.
28th January 2025 at 05:14
That is a way better name.
24th February 2024 at 00:30
Mezcal, like scotch, has different levels of smokiness. Try a less smoky mezcal because I agree it can be overpowering
4th February 2024 at 01:25
Fantastic LW riff. Maybe even better!

The Ultima Palabara is another mezcal based variation of the Last Word
6th November 2023 at 02:39
Just made this with Dolin Gènèpy and it might be better than with Chartreuse!
7th December 2024 at 04:01
Nah. Just found a bottle of Chartreuse Verde and it's still the champion!
7th October 2023 at 16:36
It's beautiful. Used Montelobos mezcal. I agree that it beats a Last Word, but I couldn't resist dropping in a maraschino cherry as I would have felt like I was missing out otherwise!
15th September 2023 at 16:45
My first time mixing with mezcal and chose this as my favourite is the original Last Word. This _might_ have the edge on it...
8th August 2023 at 07:36
I cannot believe I am saying this, but agree with all the comments - it just works!! And beats a Last Word!!!!
14th July 2023 at 22:50
Everything plays well together! Just a hint of smoke and cherry, definitely add to my regular rotation
25th May 2023 at 11:16
Very good! Complex!! I recommend Mezcla Encantado for mixing, It is a light smoky mezcal that allows other ingredientes to shine!!
22nd May 2023 at 01:48
What I love about this version is that the ingredients all play so nicely together…until you sit and concentrate and look for one ingredient or another, this cocktail is pure harmony. LOVE IT and agree with the posters before me saying it’s way better than the Last Word itself.
22nd February 2023 at 23:11
Damn. Great drink
27th November 2022 at 21:44
Gosh this one is good. I much prefer this to a regular Last Word! Surprised how well the mezcal integrates with the other ingredients as it can often be quite dominant.
7th November 2022 at 03:57
After we tried the Written Word, with Cointreau in place of Luxardo, we applied that switch to the Closing Argument with great success. You still get the lime taste without the “sting” lime juice can have sometimes.

This really is becoming one of my top
five cocktails. I used Dos Hombres mezcal (the one owned by the two Breaking Bad stars - it’s very good). I just love the sour/smoky/herby combination. Fabulous drink. I can’t think that any but the most serious cocktail bars would stock all these ingredients so it’s just as well I do!
20th August 2022 at 18:28
Outstanding. I’ve now tried this with San Cosme and a smokier Siete Misterios and on balance I prefer it more Smokey.
28th July 2022 at 07:55
This is my favourite cocktail but I do change it a little. I find that my mezcal is a bit too smokey for the drink so I use 1/4 shot mezcal and 1/2 shot Reposado Tequila. I find the combo balances the drink out.
5th July 2022 at 01:17
Is there a reason you don't use the same ratio as your take on a last word, which is a little different from the standard equal parts?
5th July 2022 at 06:42
Gin is subdued when compared to mezcal so a little less mezcal was required to give the balance I desired.
26th June 2022 at 16:42
Basically a smoked Last word, I love it. Definitely worth a try !
