1/3 fl oz Overproof white rum (unaged Jamaican/funky)
1/4 fl oz Difford's Falernum liqueur
1/12 fl oz Sugar syrup 'rich' (2 sugar to 1 water) 65.0°Brix
1 dash Angostura Aromatic Bitters

How to make

Glassware

Serve in an Old-fashioned glass

Prepare

  1. Select and pre-chill an OLD-FASHIONED GLASS.
  2. Prepare garnish of orange or lime zest twist.

Method

  1. STIR all ingredients with ice.
  2. STRAIN into ice-filled glass (preferably over a large cube or chunk of block ice).

Garnish

  1. EXPRESS orange (or lime) zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

Well that’s rather nice, the 50 and 10 split of rums really adds something. I did do 10 Falernum and skipped the sugar as the rum has enough sweetness for my taste already. Lovely.

A really nice rum sipper... just a hint of tiki without using citrus directly. I used Diplomático Mantuano, Wray & Nephew, Taylor's Velvet Falernum, raw sugar 2:1 syrup, and of course Ango. I had some blood oranges on hand so used expressed a blood orange peel twist and dropped it in the drink. Delightful.

Love the versatility of this cocktail. Made using Barbados gold and Haitian Clairin. Added a float of Jamaican Navy rum. Powerful, but perfect on a cold December night (cold for San Diego, CA, USA).

This is a lovely cocktail. It's not exactly recognizable as an "Old Fashioned", but it follows the traditional recipe and it absolutely works. The lime twist works better than the orange, though, melding wonderfully with the Falernum.

Made with Ron Del Barillito three star, which is aged 6-10 yrs. Follow more of a plain method of a barspoon of pure cane simple syrup and angostura bitters, one good dash. Lime twist and a round cube…..excellent !

The overproof rum really does make this. Just did a 500ml batch freezer door version using Doorly's 12, Wry and Nephew white over proof, Bitter Truth falernum and coconut water for dilution (pour straight from the bottle over ice, so dilution is needed for a batched cocktail). Really nice. I'm going to experiment with adding Stiggin's Fancy, too.

I really like the Maple Rum Old-Fashioned here on DG, but this is an interesting option if you want a boozier rum-based old-fashioned. I used Appleton Estate 8 and Wray & Nephew, so there was a fair amount of "funk", but overall enjoyable and as expected.
