Ingredients:
1 12 oz Bourbon whiskey
12 oz Cointreau triple sec liqueur
12 oz Strucchi Rosso Vermouth
12 oz Lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
0.08 oz Monin Pure Cane Syrup (65.0°brix, equivalent to 2:1 rich syrup) optional
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill a Coupe glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of lemon zest & Luxardo Maraschino Cherry.
  3. SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
  4. FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.
  5. EXPRESS lemon zest twist over the cocktail and float for garnish.

Zingy, sweet and sour, fruity and bourbon-laced. The sugar syrup is my own addition and depending on your lemons and tastes you may want to either omit or increase to 5ml (1/6oz).

History:

This cocktail is said to be named after an American thoroughbred who was one of the greatest racehorses in history, winning 20 of 21 races in 1919-20, so it is thought to have "originated in the mid-20th century," which follows given the thoroughbred's period of notoriety. However, you'd think such a cocktail would also appear in one or more of the numerous cocktail tomes published in the mid-1930s and subsequent decades. Well, not that I can find. I may have missed the bleeding obvious, but until somebody (please) points me in the right direction, I will regard the Man O' War as a modern-day cocktail.

American newspapers from 1915 do feature a "man-o'-war cocktail" but as The West Virginian reports on 24th July that year, this is a quite different cocktail "...made by putting one can of condensed milk in a gallon of hot water; pouring one quart of alcohol over six well-beaten eggs, adding two cups of sugar and some nutmeg (if you can get it). The result is a concoction that tastes not unlike a Christmas egg-nog."

Or its name may have come from the "Man-O-War cocktail lounge" at the 120-room Holiday Inn, part of a ten-acre complex built on Route 132 in Cape Cod in 1969. Or, indeed, an entirely different "Man-o'-War cocktail lounge" at the New Edgewater Beach Hotel, which opened in 1967 in Broward County, Southeast Florida.

However, the thoroughbred link is supported by The Indianapolis Star newspaper on 30th April 2015 as one of three "Kentucky Derby Cocktails Done Right."

2. MAN O' WAR
This citrusy cocktail; is named after one of the greatest racehorses of all time. The legendary thoroughbred won 20 of his 21 races on his way into the history books. Nicknamed "Big Red," Man o' War won the Preakness and Belmont in 1920, but not the Derby, as his owner did not want him to run.
1.5 ounces Maker's Mark
.5 ounces Cointreau
.5 ounces Sweet vermouth
.5 ounces fresh lemon juice
Add all ingredients to a shaker. Shake and strain into a coupe.

Tried this as a mixed value bag: Jack Daniels, Mancino Red, brown sugar simple syrup, no maraschino. Unexpectedly interesting - not complex, but certainly greater than the sum of its parts and will definitely have again.

I tried a budget version - Hogs 3 bourbon, Vok triple-sec, Martini rosso, with fresh lemon from my parents and my own rich syrup - no cherry. Stirred not shaken so possibly a little warm (most ingredients were chilled though), the sweetness, etc seemed good to me - citrus forward but balanced and very enjoyable!

Reading the comments before, I found the cocktail quite tart. I will follow the tip to substitute maraschino syrup for rich syrup next time.

Very enjoyable, although in this category (bourbon with lemon) I would prefer the Maple Leaf.

We went with lime juice in place of the lemon, just to lift the tartness a wee bit. In search of dryness, we substituted Orange Curacao for the triple sec. And following a commenter, substituted a barspoon of Maraschino cherry juice for the sugar syrup. A wonderfully complex sour.

This is one that I think would be a great starting point for some excellent riffs. I made it as written, but with simple syrup instead of rich. Personally, I would prefer a bit more of a citrus zing, but I’d still say this is an excellent cocktail. Next time (and there will be a next time 😉) I’ll omit the syrup altogether and/or increase the lemon juice.

This one's got great structure. Interesting how the flavor of the bourbon came through unmasked. Can't wait to make this with a better bourbon. I know it will be a five.

Tried it with four roses+cointreau, four roses small batch+cointreau, and four roses small batch+curacao. the 2nd one was surprisingly by far the best, even with Carpano Antica somehow not overwhelming. Lovely vanilla and warming spice. An excellent drink. HOF 9/291

forget the simple syrup, slurp some Luxardo marichano cherry syrup, i did two cherry drizzles.
