Averna usually provides enough sweetness for me in recipes. So, I skipped the simple. Excellent results. This will go into the regular rotation.

I used agave syrup and this was a bit too sweet. Maybe agave is sweeter than simple.

Far more balanced than its ingredients would suggest, especially with a decent rye.

With the ratios provided and using Del Maguey Vida Clásico Mezcal, I found it a bit too smokey. I might try again with 1/4 oz of Mezcal.

5 Stars- complex, smokey and not too sweet- made twice using Averna but will experiment with other amari. My now nightcap favourite.

With a good mezcal there's a really long finish and it's a very complex drink. Highly recommended.

Good evening , checking in from Oklahoma. Simon, again I was " surfing " this website and this one caught my eye so I decided, " what the hell, Rye not ?" And well DAMN this is what I was wanting, especially after a very bad week! Instead of the mezcal listed, I used El Silencio. With the spice of the Rye I used ( Bullet 100 ) the smokiness of the mezcal and the Amaro ( yes Averna) this is what I needed! Very tasty and pairs well with a fine cigar ( Boneshaker Warhammer) what a fantastic way to chill out! Absolutely AMAZING!

We went with Nardini Amaro...its clean and sharp spiciness, for us, complements the Rye and Mezcal beautifully.

Made this with
Wild Turkey 101,
Topanito Mezcal
and Montenegro Amaro
– I'm in awe.

Love rye, mezcal, and averna on their own and they play very well together here. Probably doesn't even need the simple syrup, the averna adds enough on its own. Surprised how much the smoke was mellowed out in this one, my mezcal tends to be very forward. Spicy, smoky, and sweet.

I was wrong, tried to do it without the simple syrup and just didn't work as well. Might try half next time but definitely needs some.
