Deliciously tart, and the first cocktail that I've truly loved the inclusion of black strap rum in the center. Used Cruzan black strap, Aperol, Montenegro. This one's a keeper. The maple syrup flavor in Cruzan's black strap is usually overpowering, but it's moderated and elevated in this.

A good drink that starts with fresh lemon and ends with mild Montenegro/aperitif (I used Nonino Aperitivo). The only downside for me is that I can't really taste the rum (Goslings in my case). I might need to try it again with something a bit more assertive and see how it shakes out.

The description in the book has an editing error. It refers to it as being created by "Emily Gosling of Black rum (e.g. Goslings)"

Hi Matt, many thanks for letting us know about the error...we've made a note to fix it for the next edition.

Improvised last night. Bacardi black, Campari/ Combier triple sec (split), Rammazzotti, lemon juice. Excellent! Tonight will do the same but with Averna/Vecchio Amaro del Capo split as the amaro.

I used what I have at the moment:
22.5 ml Dark/black/blackstrap rum (Coruba)
22.5 ml Aperol Aperitivo
22.5 ml Amaro (Amaro Nonino)
22.5 ml Lemon juice (freshly squeezed) 10% less here.

It is a good sour, great on the nose and taste. Not exceptional for my taste but good.

Love Montenegro, love getting into the Lost Plane. Used 12,5 ml lemon juice, got the right balance for me.

No Black Seal so used Appleton Estate 8-year-old Reserve. Montenegro smells really wrong with Appleton Estate; wrong herbal notes. Used Antico Amaro Noveis instead, which worked fine with the Jamaican pot-still rum and Aperol. Fairly tart with 3/4 oz lemon juice but lemon is the right citrus for this drink.

Original (or the standard Difford's recipe) is really superb. Commenting to say that swapping ingredients seems to work well and this cocktail is forgiving with mild experimentation. Brilliant with Luxardo Aperitivo, Lazzaroni Amaro, overproof triple molasses rum, and lime juice (instead of lemon).

The version as above tastes like a delicious orange/grapefruit aperitivo and I couldn’t taste the rum at all. I tried it with Worthy Park 109 and it’s fabulous! The higher proof and the touch of funk feels like what this cocktail needs.

I would have to disagree with the dryness rating. Mine was more in the middle or even slightly sweet.
